Country Bids Farewell to Political Titans

Posted on in The Judiciary · Foreign Policy

Retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor died last week at 93 in her home state of Arizona. The late justice made history as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court and routinely served as the decisive vote on numerous landmark cases. As a jurist, O’Connor is remembered for consensus-building and treating opposing viewpoints with respect. Despite her conservative politics and mild manner, Justice O’Connor was a staunch defender of abortion rights and affirmative action but was not reluctant to take a controversial position as she did in Bush v. Gore. Critics bemoaning the partisanship of the Court look for lessons from Justice O’Connor to restore judicial cooperation.

What past political positions did O’Connor hold?
